In his preface he relates that the present work is intended to offer a background set of principles and to review state-of-the-art techniques of diagnosis and treatment in SCI care. The management of persons with SCI is outlined clearly in the first four chapters. Chapter 1, Principles of SCI, reviews anatomy of the spinal cord and briefly mentions problems and goals of care phases of SCI. Chapter 2, Acute Care, covers neurologic and orthopedic aspects of SCI and treatment approaches to minimize further injury and complications. Chapter 3, Rehabilitation, classifies impairments of sensation, motor function, micturition, defecation, sexual function, autonomic function, skin, and breathing. The management of these impairments, with the goal of minimizing disability, is outlined. Problems that might be faced in continuing care, such as posttraumatic syringomyelia, spasticity, and pain, are focused on in Chapter 4. The fifth and last chapter of this book, Participatory Planning, emphasizes involving the patient in goal setting and presents approaches for the planning process. The authors intended audience-physicians working with patients with SCI (particularly residents in neurology and rehabilitation medicine), physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses, and others seeking a basic introduction to SCI-certainly will find this work useful. Other texts, including those listed in the references at the end of each chapter, would be better resources for more detailed information on the management of persons who have SCI. Physical therapy practitioners and other health care professionals would find the chapter on participatory planning particularly interesting and valuable.
In the populous state of California, DCs have taken a huge hit in workers compensation claims. Meanwhile, other states are rearranging their personal injury laws. I thought this subject matter would make for a nice “interview.” The following is what I would say if asked for my thoughts on the current state of affairs in personal injury trends and what the future holds for chiropractic practitioners. A: I think that in order to understand the big picture, you need to parse out the contributions of the major players in this business, if I can call it that. The players are the insurers, the lawyers, the doctors, the various experts sometimes relied upon during the litigation process, the government and, most importantly, the victims of trauma. Q: Lets start with insurers - what are their contributions to the current personal injury environment?

Dear Heloise: Throughout the year, we shred old documents that are no longer needed that have credit-card numbers, Social Security numbers and bank-account numbers on them. Our shredder, which works perfectly fine, is an older model that only shreds in strips. I became suspicious of throwing those strips in the regular trash, envisioning some opportunistic crook taping the strips back together and stealing our identity. Dear Kathy: Well, this is one way to prevent anyone from getting any personal information from your trash. However, its highly unlikely that someone would rummage through the trash, put those strips together and obtain any useful information. But if it makes you feel better, why not? — Heloise Dear Heloise: When I was going to a dressy evening concert, I was wearing black. I worried about not being seen by cars in the garage or on the long walk to the concert hall. I pinned a crystal brooch to the lower back hip area of my jacket. It picked up lights, and I received several compliments. –C. Southworth in Central California
Recent media reports about Arthur Anderson LLP and Enron Corp. imply that paper shredding is primarily a cover-up for wrong-doing. However, both the National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) and the owner of an area shredding company say that document shredding is a sound-and ethical-business practice. “Proper shredding guarantees security. For liability issues, to protect against identity theft, deciding what to shred is very basic, anything with identifiers on it-a persons name, phone number, address, date of birth, social security number, thats a big one.” Recent federal legislation requires businesses to protect the security and confidentiality of patients and customers personal data. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (known as HIPAA) suggests that appropriate safeguards would include shredding documents containing protected health information prior to disposal. The Gramm-Leach-Biley Act of 1999 (also known as the Financial Services Modernization Act), doesnt mention shredding specifically, but requires that financial institutions and insurance companies discarding any paper documents containing personal information must safely destroy them.

Rolex watch and diamond cufflinks have come to bankruptcy trustees. They are said to be worth pounds 11,000.
AS status symbols go, it is certainly unusual. While show-offs the world over can boast a Rolex watch, only one can own the model with a fully functioning buzz saw - but it will cost them #20,000. British super-spy Bond was often seen in the films being kitted out with everyday items modified by fictional MI6 munitions expert Q. The Rolex, featured in the first of the Bond series to star Roger Moore, is expected to be the hot item. Other lots in the specialist auction include a blue towelling robe worn by Ursula Andress in the 1962 film Dr No, when she played the seductive Honey Ryder. It is estimated that the robe will fetch #9000. There is also a cream and burgundy pyjama set, monogrammed with the initials JB, with matching burgundy slippers, as featured in Live And Let Die. The highest price is likely to be for the spys trademark Aston Martin car. An Aston Martin DBS, from Pierce Brosnans first Bond movie, 1995s Goldeneye, will be auctioned for an expected price of #100,000 to #150,000.

Exercise and Cancers: Research Opportunities for Health-Related Fitness ScientistsRepresentatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will challenge AAHPERD members to contribute to cancer prevention and control, describing the most promising research opportunities and resources to support investigation of the relationships between cancers and exercise. The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. Members will be asked to contribute ideas for a research agenda. The Cancer-Exercise Agenda: Opportunities in Applications Research

In the golden age of television, Art Linkletter showed us that children say the darnedest things. Today, in the golden age of document security, shredder manufacturers are finding that people shred the darnedest things. Given the nature of their function, shredders have to be made to withstand a certain amount of punishment. But no matter how tough theyre made, users in the real world seem to have an uncanny knack for coming up with ways to stress them that the folks in the RD department probably never thought of. Its a tendency that lends credence to the old adage that somebody who claims to have made something `completely foolproof has probably sorely underestimated the ingenuity of a complete fool. “I am always amazed at how people can misbehave. Theres no device that I know of that gets abused and misused the way a shredder does. Our challenge is to make them tough enough yet still affordable,” says Tony Storrie, vice president of marketing for shredders at Fellowes Manufacturing.

LaserLaser light is a special type of glow. In some materials, a photon passing near an atom with an outer-orbital electron in a high-energy state can, without being absorbed or deflected, stimulate that electron to drop to a lower energy state. The electron gives up its energy in the form of a photon that is of the same wavelength as the impinging photon, in phase with it, and traveling in the same direction. (To say that two photons are in phase means that, if they are considered as waves extended through space, their peaks and troughs are aligned; peak matches peak and trough matches trough.) Such light is termed coherent. Coherent light is rare in nature because atoms in most light sources (e.g., the Sun) are

Part II, explanatory economics, represents the bulk of the book. The economics of demand, price elasticity, risk aversion, and the effect of insurance on the demand for medical services are explained clearly and well. Behavior of suppliers in the medical care market is reviewed, with attention given to differences in for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. A solid explanation of competitive markets allows discussion of timely issues such as the limits of applicability of the competitive model to the medical care market, price and nonprice competition, and market power of providers, purchasers, and patients. Outside readings on current managed competition proposals would augment the textbook discussion well.A short section on the economic effects of information asymmetries in the medical care and health insurance market introduces the concepts of supplier induced demand and adverse selection. Both discussions are short, but the portion on adverse selection especially needs expansion. More rigor, explanatory graphs, and a more extensive bibliography would make the adverse selection concept more useful. This topic is critical to a sound understanding of the functioning of medical expense insurance. The final section deals with value judgments and evaluative economics. The nontechnical explanation of efficiency versus fairness criteria for evaluating medical care policy is somewhat cursory. More technical material is needed to improve the precision of this discussion. However, even without any additions, the text provides a general background on issues of access to medical care, affordability, and quality of care. The difficulty of making allocation decisions given scarce resources is clearly laid out and opens the way for a discussion of policy alternatives.
Editors note: This article is adapted from Menke and Bobbins Integrative Chiropractic, scheduled for release in 2007 by Elsevier Health Sciences. “The medicalization of early diagnosis not only hampers and discourages preventative health care, but it also trains the patient-to-be to function in the meantime as an acolyte to his doctor. He learns to depend on the physician in sickness and in health. He turns into a lifelong patient.” “Medicalizing” is forcing conditions into familiar diagnostic categories for medical management.1 Every complaint has an antidote, whether it needs one or not. ; Treating natural consequences of living as diseases that must be vanquished, leads to too much treatment and too much dependence on the authoritative “professional.” We tend to grant most, if not all of our decision-making authority to an expert in highly complex technologies. In the case of medicine, this often complicates the commonplace condition and prolongs selflimiting ones. Today, diseases and drugs are way oversold.

IAN HARVEY claimed County Championship-best figures of 6 for 19 in 15 overs to put treble-winners Gloucestershire in control at Hove yesterday. The West Country side, who with two wins from their last two matches could add promotion to their astonishing triumphs in one-day cricket, skittled Sussex for 138 on a blameless pitch before reaching 74 for 2 in reply when bad light cut short the day. Harveys early efforts saw him take 4 for 7 in 11 overs as Sussex stumbled to 87 for 6 by lunch. A succession of players got out to poor shots and only Richard Montgomerie made any real progress by reaching 30 off 62 balls before becoming Ben Gannons first victim.
THE AUSTRALIA captain Steve Waugh singled out the master leg- spinner Shane Warne for special praise after his sides 246-run win over South Africa in the first Test here yesterday. The man-of-the-match Warne followed up his five-wicket haul in the first innings with figures of 3 for 57 as the tourists, chasing a victory target of 375, were skittled out for 128 on the final day. Waugh said: “It was certainly a good team effort. We had to work hard today and I thought our bowling was outstanding. Australia had already dominated with the bat during this match and Waugh added: “Theyre not playing many loose shots at the moment. Matty Haydens century in the second innings was an outstanding knock and set us up. It gave us plenty of time to bowl South Africa out.”

That article discussed the 1999 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on medical error, “To Err Is Human,” and the erosion of public trust in U.S. health care.

Red Jacket Red Jacket (1758-1830) was a Seneca Tribal Commander who lent support to the British during the Revolutionary War. He also fought to prevent conversions to Christianity among the Iroquios. Although Red Jacket eventually allied himself with other Indian nations in support of the British during the American Revolution, he was originally hesitant about the affiliation. This ambivalence perhaps explains why he did little fighting during the conflict. According to a number of accounts, Red Jackets reluctance to fight was perceived as cowardice by some Iroquois war leaders such as Corn-planter and Joseph Brant. After the war, Red Jacket became a principal spokesman for the Seneca people. He was present at treaty negotiations in 1794 and 1797 in which major portions of Seneca land in upstate New York were ceded or partitioned into smaller reservations. During this era, Red Jacket also became an outspoken opponent of Christianity and an advocate for preserving traditional Iroquois beliefs. His efforts to protect traditional beliefs culminated in the temporary expulsion of all Christian missionaries from Seneca territory in 1824. Red Jacket and the so-called Pagan Party were undermined in the ensuing years, however, by accusations of witchcraft and Red Jackets own problems with alcohol. In 1827, Red Jacket was deposed as a Seneca chief. He died three years later, after his own family had converted to Christianity.
CHERIE Blairs dodgy dress sense has been dealt another blow after a designer jacket she donated to charity failed to attract a single bid. Aberdonians shunned the black scoop-neck Sheri Bodell jacket at a charity auction in the city. Regional co-ordinator Helen Jocelyn said: “It attracted a lot of attention during viewing, but no one went for it.

When choosing a shredder, think about the level of security you require, and then choose a crosscut shredder to yield tiny particles of waste or a less costly strip-cut model. Crosscut provides a higher security level than strip shreds, but because crosscut requires a more complicated cutting mechanism, it will cost more. If you want to shred CDs, diskettes, or other data-recording media, check model specifications for these materials. Some crosscut models in this range can handle CDs on a limited basis or not at all, but many heavy-duty strip shredders can. Also consider who will service the shredder and whether supplies such as oil and bags are readily available. Several safety and convenience
The paper shredder took on mythical status during the Enron saga. Who shredded what and when they shredded it became pertinent information in unraveling the companys alleged misdeeds. Contacted for a column in a regional newspaper at the time investigators were looking into Enron-related shredder shenanigans, Willie Geiser of Allshred Services, Toledo, Ohio, acknowledged that the document destruction-related news was helping his business. Legitimate security factors–not cover-ups–are the main reasons companies like Allshred have grown in importance. Identity theft has mushroomed as a white-collar crime, and thorough information and document destruction services can help prevent identify thefts spread. DEDICATED TO SERVICE. The distant observer may conclude that a document destruction firm is interchangeable with a paper recycling company. Geiser vehemently disagrees.

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.
Real Estate Brokers with the SRES designation help seniors make wise decisions about selling their home, buying rental property, managing the capital gains and estate tax implications of owning real estate, obtaining a reverse mortgage, moving to a senior community and other issues. The designation was introduced in 1997 and is nationally recognized.

epoch has recognised that there are things pleasing to contemplate independently of the desire we may feel for them. He has no preconceived definition of beauty. Beauty and art were not always so closely related as today: beauty belonged originally to nature, not to created things. This book is therefore a history of Beauty and not a history of art (or of literature or music. Somewhat ironically, however, ideas of beauty are here mainly illustrated by works of art and not, for example, by loaves of beautifully made bread or beautifully laid brick walls. Images and textual selections work together to show that there is no absolute concept of beauty in things or men but criteria shaped by different eras and places.

The home-cleaning experts at Hoover recommend weekly or more frequent vacuuming with a Hoover upright with an allergen-filtration system. For many people, spring is considered the high season for allergies. But for some homeowners who dont routinely and thoroughly clean their carpets, the sniffling and sneezing associated with allergies may persist yearround. Deep cleaning, a job once handled mainly by professional carpet cleaners, can be done quickly and effectively by consumers with a Steamvac deep cleaner. The cleaner distributes a solution of hot tap water and special detergent into the carpet, agitates the fibers with its exclusive, five rotating-brush system and then extracts the solution containing dirt. The five-brush agitation system and carpet detergent helps release the dirt and allergens from the carpet fibers for removal by the Steamvac deep cleaner.

“There are [more than] 30 million Americans who have no health insurance and another 20 million who have inadequate health insurance,” says Rep. Louis Stokes (D0Ohio), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust. “It is mandatory that we begin to try and give Americans–particularly minorities–adequate health care as a right.” The Bush plan would give people not covered by Medicaid tax credits, and families making less than $80,000 a year tax deductions to pay for medical costs. He would also pass laws to ensure that even chronically ill patients could receive health insurance. The plan has received a cool reception on Capitol Hill, and alternate proposals, including a full-scale, government-paid national health insurance plan, are under development. But what does America really want for its health care system? The views are many.

Growth in exposure prompts change in coverage provision Are your homeowners clients concerned about their exposure to personal injury claims? They should be, especially if they have adolescent children. In the Internet age, however, the potential for personal injury claims has increased substantially. Thanks to the global reach of e-mail, blogs, and shared sites such as MySpace and YouTube, damaging comments can be instantly transmitted to millions of people throughout the world and live on, so to speak, in electronic files that may never be fully expunged.
It is almost worthwhile getting “whiplash” preprinted on a claim form to save time Turning first to the real increase, the recently published report by the governments Statistical Service on Road Accidents in Great Britain in 1996 provides a clue. Injuries in 1996 totalled 317,000, which was an increase on the 307,000 in 1995. Fatalities, however, fell slightly to 3,598 from 3,621. Both figures had been generally falling since the mid 60s, when they peaked at just under 8,000 fatalities and just under 400,000 injuries. This has doubtless arisen for a whole number of reasons, including compulsory seat belts and crash helmets, drink drive regulations, air bags, better car design, and many others. To achieve this reduction over that period was particularly remarkable, because the vehicle population in the mid 60s was 13 million compared with slightly over 26 million now. Most of this increase in vehicle population can be found on the M25 each morning and evening!
When you are involved in a car accident, there are a number of things you should know, but unfortunately, this information is not readily available. This article discusses what you need to know about personal injury claims long before you even think about hiring a lawyer. If you are injured in a car accident, and the accident was not your fault, you have the right to sue the owner and driver of the other vehicle for damages. These damages are paid to you by the other drivers insurance company. Tort law does not compensate the other driver for any injury he or she may have suffered as a result of causing the car accident. However, separate from tort law, all automobile insurance policies sold in Alberta provide for me payment of accident and disability benefits. Unlike tort law, both you and the driver of the other vehicle are entitled to receive the same accident and disability benefits.

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.
