In some cases, a stepparent will legally adopt his or her spouses children from a previous marriage. The biological father or mother must either be absent with no legal claim to custody, or must grant permission for the stepparent to adopt.
In situations where a single parent lives with someone outside of marriage, that person may be referred to as a co-parent. Co-parent is also the name given to the partner in a homosexual relationship who shares the household and parenting responsibilities with a childs legal adoptive or biological parent.
The home which was owned by the family prior to a divorce or separation is referred to as the family home in many state laws. In court settlements of divorce and child custody issues, the sale of the family home may be prohibited as long as the minor children are still living there with the custodial parent. The sale of the home may be permitted (or required to pay the noncustodial parent his or her share of its value) if the custodial parent moves or remarries, or when the children leave home to establish their own residences.
The term extended family traditionally meant the biological relatives of a nuclear family; i.e., the parents, sisters, and brothers of both members of a married couple. It was sometimes used to refer to the people living in the household beyond the parents and children. As family relationships and configurations have become more complex due to divorce and remarriage, extended family has come to refer to all the biological, adoptive, step-, and half-relatives.
Government agencies and other statistics-gathering organizations use the term head of household to refer to the person who contributes more than half of the necessary support of the family members (other than the spouse); in common usage, the head of household is the person who provides primary financial support for the family.

An Orange County Business Journal Special Report Subtle Spillover of Subprime Tightening But Moneys Still Flowing is it harder for businesses, I developers and homebuyers to get a loan in the wake of the subprime mortgage meltdown?
Credit Reporting Agency has announced a bold initiative to provide UK consumers with free annual access to their credit report. This appears to be a groundbreaking move to help more people become aware of the information held about them and used by lenders, employers and other companies. Barry Stamp FICM, Joint Managing Director, says, “Since 1975 everybody has had a statutory right to see what others hold about them - but this was based on last century technology and involved sending £2 by post to a credit agency and getting a paper printout in return within seven working days. Its important that everyone can have regular and easy access to credit report information - so were providing an online credit report to everyone for free, every year. Consumers can check what information is held about them and protect themselves from the impact of errors and guard against the increasing threat of identity theft.” The type of information held on credit reports includes:

The MusicDar Williams discussed during her set the reasons why womyn should switch to organic, unbleached cotton tampons and other products such as sea sponges during our periods. The traces of dioxins found in grocery store tampons are hazardous carcinogens; at the same time, the male-owned “feminine hygiene product” industry is making an astounding profit off our bodies. Williams considered that the organic products are more expensive than mainstream ones, so she offered a few hilarious possibilities for overcoming the increased expense. One suggestion was to give female loved ones packages of woman-safe tampons for birthday and seasonal gifts. For her personal contribution, she stopped at every health food store and co-op on her way to the festival and cleared their shelves of boxes of unbleached tampons. At this point her traveling companions walked down the catwalk with an enormous basket full of tampons and began wildly flinging them into the audience. Gleeful womyn rushed the stage to scoop up flying tampons!Tribe 8 returned for the night stage this year. The audience was noticeably smaller than other nights because many women didnt attend the performance. I hadnt been to one of their shows before so I looked forward to seeing what all the fuss was about from previous years. Yes, Lynn Breedlove hacked off a dildo on stage in Hothead Paisan fashion. I had a visceral jolt of fascination and revulsion watching her saw at the big dildo with her huge, bright silver knife — an effect the whole show seems intended to engender. I enjoyed the show — it was energetic, joyful and participative even while it fiercely expressed their anger about being women in a patriarchal world. Many women can relate to their first song, “The Mens Room is Down the Hall.” In this song Breedlove challenges those who judge her for not conforming to patriarchal norms of how a woman should dress and act.
PETER MULVEY Friends House Concerts, Luckett house, 7 p.m. today, $10, 329- 1644 While he strums in the intimate comfort of the Luckett house living room, where he last performed in November, the grittier aspects of Peter Mulveys artistic life come bleeding out. The singer- songwriter, with a penchant for ambitious, creative fretwork, spent time busking in Dublin, Ireland, then in daylong sessions in the subways and streets of Boston. Milwaukee-based Mulvey is a well-rounded artist who studied theater in college before beginning his successful music career.
Sondheim: Passion Original Broadway Cast (EMI Angel CDQ 7243-5-55251-2) Passion is effectively a “musical” without songs. Passion feels through-composed, though much of it is not sung or underscored. Passion is stream of consciousness, dream-like in its narrative flow. Passion is at once the most febrile and effulgently lyrical of Stephen Sondheim. All of which might just explain why it appears to have divided even the fully paid-up members of his appreciation society. Perhaps the most notable aspect of this show is the degree to which it has refined the relationship between that which is spoken and that which is sung. Passion is songful. Like the emotions it chronicles, this “rhapsody” on the power of unconditional

Its the vivacity of these characters that Zadie Smith brings to On Beauty and lends to the books much-deserved attention.

Negotiating The Fraud Exclusion It is important for policyholders to understand, however, that the exact wording of the exclusion can differ substantially from policy to policy. This can have important practical ramifications for directors and officers. For example, in some instances, the terms of the exclusion may allow an insurance company to refuse to provide a director or officer with a defense to a claim in a lawsuit asserting fraud; the director or officer therefore will be obligated to retain and pay for his or her own attorney. In other situations, the exclusion only may prohibit an insurance company from indemnifying a director or officer once fraud has been proven in the underlying lawsuit; the director or officer is much more likely to avoid having to pay any costs out-of-pocket with this form of the exclusion.

LAW IN BUSINESSLaw governs and regulates virtually all aspects of the business process, from the right to engage in a business or trade, to the legal form of a business, to agreements for buying and selling merchandise or rendering services. Law regulates the quality of products sold and the advertising of products for sale. Law governs the employment relationship, protects business property, and taxes business income. This article explores the relationship of business and law in several of these areas.Business in the United States is regulated by federal and state laws as well as by local ordinances. State law regulating forms of business, business agreements, and some taxes is the most important. Federal law regulates such things as advertising, civil rights, and protection of such property as inventions. Local law typically regulates business hours, where one can do business (zoning), and health and safety.

Rodent control is taking some interesting and not so encouraging turns. There is an initiative that will be introduced in California on the November 1998 ballot (assuming it gets the 500,000 signatures needed, which is a slam dunk in California). It is called an Initiative to Ban Cruel Traps. This initiative, in a nutshell, will make it illegal to use a body gripping trap. one that grips the mammals body or body part, including, but not limited to, steel-jawed leghold traps, padded-jaw leghold traps, Conibear traps, and snares. This initiative also states that, it is illegal for any person, including employees of the federal, state, county or municipal government, to use or authorize the use of any steel-jawed leghold trap, padded or otherwise, to capture any game mammal, fur-bearing mammal, non-game mammal, protected mammal, or any dog or cat. Now, stop and reread that paragraph and think about it for a minute. This initiative decides for us that we cant control agricultural fur-bearing pests any longer. For that matter, it specifically states that you cant trap anything that has fur on it for any reason, and that the U.S. Fish Wildlife Service, State Department of Fish Game and your local county ag commissioner or county trapper cant do it either. It does make provision for the protection of human health and safety (pretty considerate - you know how vicious those gopher and mole attacks on children have been lately), and it will allow you to use mouse traps in your basement. Oh, and by the way, it introduces two chemicals that can no longer by used - Compound 1080 and sodium cyanide. What are these used for? Well, its not rodent control. The state has been experimenting with these two chemicals for coyote control. They make a collar to put around a lambs neck. If the animal is unfortunate enough to be a victim of a coyote attack and the coyote punctures the collar its lights out for the sheep killer. The point here is precedent - get these two and then work your way on to household chemicals for insect and rodent control and sweep everything up in between.Since this is not a political editorial, all I can say is watch out for this one. Agriculture will lose big time, so tell a friend and lets make sure that we dont get tied down by bad law written by extremists. If you want a copy of this initiative yourself, again, hit me on the e-mail, and Ill send you a copy. You can read it yourself and decide on your own. I think it is very important that we dont make our decision based on whats on TV. Hollywood is anti-trapping and they have a lot of money to spend to support their position. If you want a recent case history lesson you may look at the fine State of Colorado, which had a similar initiative pass last year by a 51% margin. After the smoke cleared, it was disclosed that Hollywood spent just a little over a quarter million dollars to promote the initiative. All the local state and county representatives, combined with the agriculture and fur trapping industries, could muster was $48,000, and they lost.
Modern pest control is often termed IPM–which can be defined as a coordination of several management functions to: * Resolve these infestations with short-term control(s). * Reduce or eliminate the causes of infestation with long-term resolutions.

Hair, Beautiful hair On meeting someone, hair style and colour are often the salient features we notice, significantly influencing our first impression. Possibly because it resists decay after death, through the ages hair has come to symbolize love, strength and power.
What do you get when you mix punk rockers with senior citizens? On a grocery delivery day last year for “We Are Family,” a small interfaith intiative serving the elderly, volunteers gathered to fill bags and take them to residents of the North Capitol neighborhd of Washington, D.C. We Are Family-part of the Northwest Settlement House, an organization with a long history in Washington, and Faith in Action D.C., a program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-draws many of its volunteers from the D.C. punk scene and the global justice movement, known more by the broader public for protest and rebellion.
very Saturday afternoon, in living rooms all around the country, whole families would sit transfixed by the feats of a man sporting a pencil thin moustache, lurid satin suit, scarlet nail polish and crimping tongs. Amazingly, the rather more modern hairdressers portrayed by Amanda Holden and Sarah Parish in BBC1s new salon-based drama Cutting It can trace their lineage directly back to Raymond of Mayfair. Despite his ridiculous name, Mr Teasy Weasy set in motion a process that would change the way we all thought about our hair and, in particular, our hairdresser. The hairdressers has always been a social hub. In every salon on every high street a million confidences have been shared. But the phenomenon initiated by that phoney Frenchman, Raymond, meant that hairdressers were no longer only instrumental in personal change but in social change too. In the Sixties and Seventies the hairdressing salon became a locus of social upheaval. People of different class, age and provenance mixed freely - in front of and behind the reception desk, accompanied by the constant background whoosh of the hairdryer and the smell of ammonia.

Real Estate Brokers with the SRES designation help seniors make wise decisions about selling their home, buying rental property, managing the capital gains and estate tax implications of owning real estate, obtaining a reverse mortgage, moving to a senior community and other issues. Burnett joined the Jerry Long Real Estate Group in March 1999. His primary responsibilities are general office management and client care, coordination of property showings, maintenance of current listing inventory, contracts pending and closing activities. Burnett is also actively involved in the creation of marketing and promotional materials. He attended Penn Valley Community College in Kansas City, Mo., and the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

SLIMMERS across Ireland have lost an incredible 333,690Ibs to get to their ideal weight using the popular WeightWatchers programme. Thats the equivalent of 22 fully-grown elephants, 166,885 bags of sugar or 55,615 heavy house bricks. Another 47,000 people are also shedding thousands of pounds in their bid to beat the battle of the bulge.
* Recently Unilever plunked down $2.3 billion for Slim-Fast — maker of weight management and nutritional products–to compete in the burgeoning market for weight loss products. According to a recent study (RGA-111 Weight Loss Products: Supplements, Foods and Beverages) from Business Communications Co., Norwalk, Conn., an estimated 40 million Americans are classified as obese. About $240 billion per year is spent for the treatment of obesity-related conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke and high blood pressure. The weight loss market for food and beverages is expected to increase at an annual compounded growth rate of 3.7% for the next four years, reaching $17.5 billion by 2004.
Meal and snack replacement products helped participants in a German study lose weight-and keep it off. Losing a small percentage of body weight can make a big difference in reducing an obese persons risk of developing cardiovascular disease or diabetes. Yet maintaining weight loss over the long term can be a problem. A German study published in the August 2000 issue of Obesity Research reports that using one meal and one snack replacement product a day can help those whove lost weight keep it off.

OAKLAND — A psychologist in the Hans Reiser murder trial testified Thursday that childrens memories and recollections — such as that of the Reisers oldest child — can change depending on the questions and how theyre asked concerning an event. In reviewing Reisers interviews with police and testimony in court, Fraga said, “there was significant variation in the interview style across the interviews” that likely affected the young childs recollection. “It would appear, from the transcripts, that the techniques used in the interviews or the way he was interviewed fostered confusion and resulted in many instances of variable responding,” Fraga said.

I am talking about the chronic givers–elderly people and those who are doctor dependent. One woman has kept me in eight varieties of home made jam for years. To her I give excess produce from my garden (whether it is suitable for incorporation in jam or not). Patients who insist on bringing chocolate for my children on ever), visit receive some sort of confectionery from them at Christmas. You may argue that by this reciprocity I am perpetuating the situation. I feel it restores a balance. Some patients do not like it, which is fine by me. If they refuse to accept a gift from me how could I possibly take one from them? At this point I have to admit that I was brought up giving presents to patients. I clearly remember, as a child in the 60s, doing the Christmas round with my father, who was also a general practitioner. The back of his car contained a large cardboard box of poinsettias and half a dozen individually wrapped baby bottles of champagne. As darkness fell and Christmas lights came on in windows we would drive from one fusty home to another, greeting impossibly old and decaying and undoubtedly lonely people. Everywhere the welcome was warm; sometimes there were drinks and mince pies, and we collected chocolates and bottles ourselves as the afternoon progressed. These patients had become special to my father over the years by virtue of their age, their disabilities, their social isolation, or just their personalities. Moreover, I suspect that giving as well as receiving at Christmas helped him to maintain a position of strength through the ensuing 12 months of regular visiting, a feature of general practice in those days.
JUST another 30 days or so to Christmas. Why do we do it to ourselves?

The What It Takes television spot focuses on how it takes a person with truly special and unique qualities — from patience and dedication to a sense of humor — to handle the day-to-day challenges of running a small business. Recognizing small business owners are stretched for time and lack the resources of large corporations, the MasterCard ad captures real-life small business moments such as working odd hours and dealing with faulty office equipment. MasterCards What It Takes commercial salutes people in business for themselves, while also demonstrating why MasterCard business cards are the most effective way to pay for all the things a small business needs. A corresponding print ad is slated to break later this summer in publications such as Fortune, New York Times Magazine, TIME and The Wall Street Journal. The creative used in the print versions will follow the What It Takes theme leveraged in the new television commercial. Both the television and print ads are designed to build awareness of MasterCards suite of solutions created specifically for small business owners. To address the needs of this target market, MasterCard developed MasterCard Working for Small Business, a comprehensive global program that provides small businesses with payment cards, online tools and other resources that deliver financial control, data management, analysis and reporting, along with rewards and benefits.
ADVERTISING MEDIAAUDIORadio stations feature many different programming emphases. These range from music-oriented formats such as country, adult contemporary, classic rock, and alternative rock to news-or talk-oriented formats. Since these different formats attract different demographic segments of the total audience, business owners can take appreciable measures to reach their target audience simply by buying time on appropriate stations. Another major advantage of radio advertising is that it is inexpensive to place and to produce, allowing small business owners to place advertisements on more than one station in a given market. In addition, radio advertising content can be changed quickly to meet changes in the market or to reflect new business objectives. Finally, radio reaches large numbers of commuters, income-generating people who often pay more attention to radio advertising than to other advertising media, especially if they are driving alone.

Hastings Entertainment operates 147 entertainment superstore locations in 22 states.
Marked by diversity and range, the entertainment industry comprises producers and distributors of motion picture films, prerecorded music tapes and discs, operas. Concerts, stage shows, and other types of entertainment on a payment or fee admission. Two major segments of the entertainment industry, namely, prerecorded music and entertainment motion picture films, are global pacesetters and import export earners. While the economic recovery has been a contributing factor to the surge in prerecorded sales, equally important has been the proliferation of music video and the emergence of new sound effects. Music that accompany a musical numbeR, have had a great impact on the industry. They have dramatically increased sales of records that received only a mild reception after radio broadcast. Also, the technique has been largely responsible for the successful introduction of new vocals and musical groups to the music industry in general. The outlook for the music industry is one of continued growth, based on a strong economy, the excitement over music videos, the emergence of new artists and groups, and the recent introduction of the compact disk. Some moderating effect, however, may be expected by the changing age composition of the U.S. population, which will contain a lower proportion of young people between 1984 and 1990.

The Education of a Graphic Designer Allworth Press, 2005 $24.95, 355 pages Far from being a resource for design educators only, Hellers book should get the seasoned practitioner, as well as the novice, pondering questions of design theory, problem solving, and what makes a truly well equipped graphic designer. The “How We Learn What We Learn” section includes essays with titles such as “Education in an Adolescent Profession” and “Tear It Down.” “How I Learned What I Learned” offers interviews with such notables as Milton Glaser, and “How We Teach What We Teach” explores views on course syllabi or “what every graphic designer should know.” Todays professional graphic designer is, at various times, an artist, a typographer, a technician, a businessperson, a marketer, an anthropologist, and more. For those considering a career in graphic design, as well as those already working in the field, this book should be a welcome resource.
THE EDUCATION OF A GRAPHIC DESIGNER by Steven Heller (ed.) “Gone are the days when someone (like me, for instance) stumbled into the field, learned totally by doing, and got a great job almost by accident,” explains Heller. “. at times graphic design education still seems like a crapshoot.” Without a solid education in graphic design and support from recognized designers, todays rising stars would lack the opportunities necessary to kick-start their careers. As Jeffrey Keedy notes, the main lesson is that we continue to involve ourselves in the discussion and evolution of the state of design and design education: “Graphic design is bigger than any one of us, so lets start acting like we believe it.”
do it yourself Exciting news! Your boss wants some marketing materials for your company, and youve been given the responsibility of hiring and working with a graphic designer to develop them. Its a high-visibility assignment-to date, the companys materials consist solely of letterhead and business cards-and the task will be a welcome change to your usual duties. Working with a designer can be intimidating, but if youre careful in your selection of, and forthcoming in your discussions with, a graphic designer, youll have a much better chance at getting materials you really like. Furthermore, you might find a designer for a long-term business relationship.

hospitalnursing If youre on your feet all day, learn how to find shoes that really fit. If you wear shoes that dont fit well, you may be inviting or exacerbating bunions, corns, calluses hammertoes, and other foot problems. To prevent problems and keep you on your feet, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, the National Shoe Retailers Association, and the Pedorthic Footwear Association offer this advice: 1. Evaluate shoes by how they fit, not by the size marked on the label. Sizes vary among brands and styles.
Six surface officers were selected as the first student Naval Aviators not long after Naval Aviation officially began in 1911. They trained at North Island, California and coming from the fleet, their uniform shoes were black, low-quarter, square-toed, rough surface leather shoes. These functioned well and looked OK on coal burning ships where black soot often descended on personnel and their shoes. At North Island the students found themselves in a new environment characterized by brown dust from the soft surface airfield, which settled unattractively on their black shoes. After considerable discussion they decided that brown high-top shoes with brown leggings would work better for them. The brown dust wouldnt look so bad on brown shoes and might be easier to clean. On a Saturday morning they located a cobbler shop on 32nd Street in San Diego and commissioned the manager to produce the shoes at a price they could live with.

The industrial and commercial machinery industry includes establishments engaged in manufacturing machinery and equipment for commercial and industrial use. This diverse industry includes the manufacturing of a wide range of machines including computer equipment, engines, turbines, elevators, conveyors, cranes, monorails, refrigeration equipment, tractors, metalworking machines, power-driven hand tools, and office equipment. The machinery industry serves, and relies on new equipment orders from, a wide range of other industry sectors. Unfortunately, the recent economic downturn has decreased spending in a number of the sectors that support the machinery industry. On-road freight transportation, for example, is on the decline, which limits demand for diesel engines and for machinery used in automotive assembly. Demand for engine and drive systems used in agricultural equipment is also down. The pronounced downturn in the domestic housing market has sharply impacted the demand for construction equipment. The rate of commercial building has also declined due to tougher economic conditions, limiting the construction machinery market even further.

My own practice was constructed as a part of the local group of health care practitioners in my community. I sought out the best primary care physicians, physical therapists, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and physiatrists to associate with, and referred to them when it was clear that my form of intervention was not helping the patient. In this sense, I was an “integrative chiropractor” because I saw to it that the patients best interests were served in two ways. First, the patient received the best conservative care first (chiropractic) before moving on to procedures of greater risk. Secondly, the patient was free to talk openly with me and with the medical providers about all the practitioners involved, without fear of derision or embarrassment. No one was competing for the business of the patient; we were only working as a team for the patients welfare. My network included the chiefs of staff of local hospitals and spinal orthopedics at Stanford University Hospital, the best orthopedist for knees and shoulders, the best family practice physicians, and so on. Therefore, I could honestly say to the patient that he or she was getting the best care possible. In my interviews with the physicians, I learned as much about their residencies and practice patterns as I could. If they were the best at knees, where did they obtain that specialty? How many knees had they “done” in their residency? How did they currently fit in with the provision of health care in their community? Sometimes a less-flattering side of health care services would emerge from our conversations. Although I had achieved just a glimpse of the overall situation, it was clear I myself was not really a member of this healthcare system that had its own massive structure, credentialing and accreditation framework, hierarchy, rivalries, and troubles with a changing healthcare environment.
The Chiropractor, however, would be one of the longest lasting and best known of chiropractic periodicals (continuing in monthly publication until November/December 1961), and serving multiple functions along the way. Not the least of these would be its role as the “official organ” of the several professional societies BJ. founded and led: the Universal Chiropractors Association (todays ACA) and the Chiropractic Health Bureau (todays ICA).The masthead indicated that the new periodical was published by the Palmer School of Chiropractic and copyrighted by B.J. Palmer. Single copies were available for 5 cents each, or a years subscription for 50 cents, “which may be sent in postage stamps.” The first issue listed a number of articles on its cover:This first issue made what was probably liberal use of photographic images, in addition to the more standard line drawings of the times. Among the imagery was a photo of Harvey Lillard, one of the elder Palmers (the photo would appear again in various advertisements and in a textbook, The Science of Chiropractic, published by B.J. in 1906); and a picture of Old Dad Chiros class in Santa Barbara, California, during July 1903.
It is unlikely that you became a chiropractor to work in an ER. Imagine my surprise when members of our hospitals chiropractic department were asked to take a call in the emergency department (ED)! We are now in our second year of providing chiropractic coverage to the ED. In November 2000, Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center in Secaucus, New Jersey began offering chiropractic care in the ED. In an effort to satisfy the Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditations mandate to better address pain management, Meadowlands ED Director Gina Puglisi,MD, and Albert Cataffi,DC, former chiropractic department chief, developed and instituted a “chiropractor on-call” program. Dr. Puglisi readied the chiropractors with an orientation program to define the roles of the chiropractors and the rest of the ED in treating neck and back pain patients. Patients who present to the ED with neck or back pain are screened by the attending ED physician, who is responsible for ruling out serious pathology, fracture, neurological deficit, and other findings that might contraindicate spinal manipulation. The ED physician may order x-rays, blood work or other diagnostic tests. When a severe condition presents, orthopedists, neurologists or neurosurgeons are enlisted to take over the case. Historically, all patients without serious pathology were given prescriptions and discharged from the hospital, with or without adequate relief. With our chiropractor-on-call program, the ED physician now has the option of calling for a chiropractic consultation, which gives the patient the opportunity to receive additional relief.

Suddenly on the afternoon of February 8, photographer Ginny Dixon got a call from the Associated Press: The news agency could not get its photographers out of Miami fast enough to cover, a few miles north, Anna Nicole Smiths death in Hollywood, Fla., where Dixon lives. Could she, a former member of a Pulitzer Prize-winning photo team at the Los Angeles Times, rush over to Memorial Regional Hospital right away and document the troubled models final demise? But as with so many other occasions, Dixon knew how to turn nothing into something. The 5-foot-6 blond went over to the Broward County medical examiners lab, muscled her way past the aggressive paparazzi, plunked down the three-foot stepladder she always carries in her car for such reasons, and found the perfect angle to snap a decent portrait of the medical examiner his expression tired, his brow furrowed–telling the waiting press that the autopsy results could take weeks. By early that evening the shot had been beamed around the world on APs various wires. For Dixon, 46, who is out, the experience was business as usual. No longer a staff photographer for an outlet, her well-honed eye now focuses on a wider range of freelance projects, many with a charitable bent. They include her ongoing series Uncensored Life: Raw Beauty, which shows off the beauty of women with disabilities rather than the disabilities themselves. The portraits will soon be turned into a book and exhibited across the country.
LOS ANGELES CENTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDIESTrue to the documentary-art format, these photographs seethe with an underlying psychological tension: at an army base, an Anglo soldier stands looking at his young son, who is dressed in military camouflage gear and scowling at the camera; a rabbi cuts the foreskin from a tiny babys penis as two men, presumably the father and another male relative, look on and laugh ecstatically at this initiation ritual; a handsome African-American teenager in black-tie escorts his date in sparkling-white taffeta to a formal dance and, arms crossed defensively, looks coolly into the camera. In some images, homosexuality is explicit: a white and a Latino man are shown seated arm in arm in front of a poster promoting AIDS awareness. In others that depict seemingly straight-identified men interacting in social and professional scenarios, homoeroticism smoulders between the subjects–barely contained within the chafing restraints of Western masculinity. Thus a body builder–muscles straining, naked chest gleaming above a tiny bikini bulging with his manhood–is held tightly from behind by a clothed male assistant as he pumps his iron. Quintanas tender regard for his subjects/objects lends them a pathos conventionally viewed as incompatible with masculinity. The least successful images, to my mind, are those that, like Diane Arbus pictures (which Ive always been ambivalent about), gain their visual interest from the freakishness of their subjects–cross-dressers and Mr. Universe types. Other images seem overtly sentimental: a white doctor cradling a newborn in his arms; two men of color gingerly holding their babies. Yet even these images can be viewed as pushing at the conventional boundaries of masculinity by representing men whose actions are shot through with nurturing femininity. The simplest acts of male behavior are turned into poignant rituals; in one picture, a naked man faces a mirror, shaving, and a trickle of foam runs down his muscular back into the crack between his buttocks.
Brookes sitters often seem to defy the glorious tackiness of the plastic hats they model. In Danielle, for example, a butch young woman in an orange work shirt and muscle tank top sports a floral cap entirely at odds with the rest of her dress and demeanor. Danielle directs her gaze sharply off-frame and smirks at the camera, as if in contempt of the conventional femininity suggested by the cap. By combining seemingly incongruous codes of gender, Danielle forces us to think about the ways in which sexual difference is not merely assigned to, but also performed by, individual subjects. Brookes photographs often reference the poses and props of traditional oil painting. In Connie, for example, the subjects pink shower cap, resplendently set against a pale green backdrop, recalls a Jan van Eyck turban almost as much as it does a Woolworths purchase. By combining the conventions of elite portraiture with the materials of everyday consumerism, Brooke sustains a palpable, even pleasurable, tension between high and low culture. The use of brightly colored backdrops clearly establishes these portraits as studio set-ups. At the same time, Brooke attends closely to the physical specificity of each sitter–to the texture of skin, the pattern of freckles, the subtlety of facial expression. The artist deftly blurs the boundary between portraiture as an authentic revelation of the self and portraiture as a scene of performance. A series of well-crafted dialogues between artifice and identity animated Brookes impressive show.

While I cant speak for Douglas Cotant (Readers Forum, Oct. 17), I certainly endorse his position that the Salt Lake City police should do more to enforce the posted city ordinance against skateboarding, in-line skating and bicycle riding on sidewalks from 200 East to 400 West and from North Temple to 500 South. It is simply a matter of safety to the many visitors and elderly using the sidewalks as well as a matter of protecting the beautiful but often damaged planters and tiled sidewalk interchanges caused by the skateboarders. Salt Lake City
Skateboard RecommendationsWith the increasing popularity of skateboards the number of injuries has also risen. In the the 1970s, when they were also popular, the number of skateboard injuries peaked at 150,000 (in 1977). By 1984, the number fell to 19,000. With the renewed interest, the number of injuries are rising again: 37,000 in 1985 and 81,000 in 1986. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, a total of 34 children died in 1984 and 1985 from skateboard injuries.Age differences of injuries can be explained by patterns of use which are, in turn, related to physical development. Younger children have a higher center of gravity, making them more likely to fall. In addition, they may lack the coordination necessary to adequately and safely break their falls. Thus, they are more likely to sustain head injuries. Because of their resilience and shorter stature, these injuries are usually not severe. They also tend to use the skateboards at home, so they are less likely to be involved in traffic accidents.
THE PANEL Jeff Boardman, director of Freewheelin Events, organises skateboarding competitions throughout the UK; Percy Dean was brought up in Liverpool and now lives in Bristol, where he is the editor of Document Skateboard Magazine; Alister Morgan writes about extreme sports and club culture for The Independent; Pete Turvey lives in Edinburgh and is skateboarding team manager for Sole Technology and consultant to the Extreme Sports Channel; UK skateboard veteran Simon Skipp lives in Romford and is team manager for Clown Skateboards.

IF YOU VISIT TUCSON this fall or winter, be ready for impossibly beautiful sunrises, toasty days, and birds. Birds? More than that, birds that seem to draw double takes from everyone, serious birder or not. Youll find everything from bright red cardinals to painted redstarts, Chihuahuan ravens to clown-faced acorn woodpeckers. Best birding (particularly in open desert) is early in the day. If youre out a sunrise, youll be astonished at the number of variety of birds you can see. At midday, you probably wont find much. Take binoculars and a field guide. And before you set out, call Tucson Audubons rare-bird hotline–(602) 798-1005–to learn about recent sightings of unusual birds.
Back in 1981, Peter Alden and John Gooders authored a book entitled Where to Watch Birds Around the World. It introduced the globetrotting field ornithologist to 111 sites and included hand-drawn maps and bird lists for each locale. It certainly wetted my appetite for birding travel, but I understand that the book was not a commercial success; perhaps it was published too soon. Prior to the early 1980s, travel in many emerging nations was very difficult; the Cold War precluded visits to some areas, and some of the greatest birds in the world were completely inaccessible or so rare that nobody knew how a visiting observer could find them. Included in the list of “hopeless” birds at this time were such spectacular prizes as the Takahe (Porphyrio mantelli) of New Zealand, the Plains-wanderer (Pedionomus torquatus) of interior Australia, Wilsons Bird of Paradise (Cicinnurus respublica) of western New Guinea, and the mysterious Kagu (Rhynochetos jubatus) of New Caledonia. Alden and Gooders book had directions to none of these species, and only the Kagu was mentioned (their New Caledonia account stated that one of the authors had seen a Kagu 15 years before on Mt. Koghi, and they expressed the hope that it “may still survive”). Now, almost 20 years later, Nigel Wheatleys book-the fourth in a series designed to cover the entire globe-tells you exactly how to find each of these wonderful birds. Ive been lucky enough to have seen all of them within the last decade. I located them through study of travel reports from other birdwatchers, much correspondence, and arrangements with local guides and experts. Wheatley has obviously done the hours of preparation necessary and has packaged that information together in a very accessible format. The book covers all of Australasia and Oceania, north to Guam and Hawaii, east to the Pitcairn Islands, and south to Antarctica. In total, more than 160 sites are covered in some detail. (Avifaunally, Halmahera and the Moluccas should also have been in this book, but they appear in Wheatleys Asia book; this is a minor quibble.) Each country, archipelago, or major island is introduced by summaries of the rewards and challenges of visiting that locale, followed by individual site details that focus on the endemic and specialty birds. Unlike Alden and Gooders book, space is not wasted on columns of lists of common species. Instead, bird lists are written in paragraph style, and the entire approach is aimed at steering the traveler to the rare and spectacular birds he or she hopes to find.
IT IS REMARKABLE TO FIND A CONTEMPORARY POET who can honestly claim a kinship with Robinson Jeffers, without wishing to make Jeffers or himself into someone less austere or less forbidding. Jeffers descendants have included William Everson who embraced a Christianity that Jeffers could not, Gary Snyder who has seen Jeffers as an environmentalist like himself, and Czeslaw Milosz who was attracted to his moral rigor but repelled by his philosophy of inhumanism. It is hard to take Jeffers pure; he has to be diluted by some humanity. So it is remarkable that a Welsh Anglican priest and poet, after spending a lifetime in the windtorn, rocky parishes of his country, claimed a kinship with Jeffers. But so Ronald Stuart Thomas biographer Byron Rogers reports toward the end of his fragmented, tonally odd, and finally unsympathetic life of R. S. Thomas.1 Rogers quotes a 1999 interview, in which, asked if he loved God, Thomas said, “Ive been much influenced. by the American poet Robinson Jeffers, who says somewhere, the people who talk of God in human terms, think of that!” Considering the life as Rogers tells it, but also as Thomas himself tells it in several autobiographical essays, one understands the claim. The poetry helps, too. For Jeffers God could never be grasped in human terms, and that this attitude influenced a modern poet-priest is notable. One wishes Rogers himself had known more about Jeffers; if he had, he might have better understood his subject. The Welsh poet R. S. Thomas was born in Cardiff, in southern Wales, in 1913, the son of a merchant seaman, and died in 2000, while living at the end of the Lleyn Peninsula, in one of the wildest and most isolated and most westerly parts of Wales. His happiest childhood memories were of living in Holyhead, in northwestern Wales, and his life seems to have been governed by a desire to re-create the experience of growing up on the Irish Sea, in an area known for its migratory birds. When he died in his late eighties, he had been retired from the Anglican clergy for over twenty years, but during his time as a priest he had served a handful of small parishes in Wales, moving ever westward in search of native Welsh speakers, birds, and the sea. In his own autobiography, written in Welsh and called Neb or “No One,” he refers to his ecclesiastical career as insignificant. But from 1946, when he self-published his first volume of poetry, until the last book to appear during his lifetime in 1995, he published over two dozen individual volumes and collections of his poetry, several prose memoirs, and edited anthologies of country verse, religious verse, and selections of Edward Thomas, George Herbert, and Wordsworth. By the end of his life, he was closely and even notoriously associated with Welsh nationalism and declined to condemn the burning of English summer homes by arsonists in the Welsh countryside. He was of the generation of Dylan Thomas, in fact a year older than Dylan, but seems in his person and his poetry to have been the more famous Welshmans opposite. Where Dylan is ecstatically lyrical, R. S. is stoic and flinty. Where Dylan extends the music of the English lyric to meet his own rich, baritone voice, R. S., who spoke with a cut-glass English accent all his life, prefers the direct, dry utterance that is reminiscent of no one so much as late Robinson Jeffers. Where Dylan can never be mistaken as American, R. S. sounds as if he has channeled an American music via the stormy Gulf Stream that curved past his cottage door. And where Dylan lived a life of excess and died of it, R. S.s life was as ascetic as Thoreaus, albeit with the longevity of an Aaron Copland or Robert Frost. When he died, many considered R. S. Thomas the literary equal of Dylan Thomas. What the biography makes clear is that there is very little to tell, for it is a life with few events and a determined avoidance of glamour and the spotlight, with an insistence on privacy that makes Philip Larkin seem like a party animal. It is a life that Robinson Jeffers describes as the ideal one for a poet: one in which he was left alone.

Who said garage doors must be ugly? This trio of handsome doors proves that distinctive forms, architectural details, and decorative hardware can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. Handles and hinges made of wrought iron give the appearance of a pair of old-fashioned barn doors. Although the hardware implies that the doors swing open, they actually feature a standard roll-up opening system. Transoms above the doors are standard window sidelights turned horizontally. The pilasters and rounded trim of the dormer window echo the architectural details of the archways. Double garages are difficult enough to disguise, but a threecar garage can overwhelm almost any house. To lessen the impact of three repetitive bays at this home, Spitzmiller and Norris incorporated a transom above each opening. These eight-pane transoms reduce the mass of each bay and admit abundant natural light into the large garage.
The doors never need painting. Special optional windloading packages are available. Panel sections are covered by a 20 year limited warranty and the components offer a 3-year limited warranty. The doors are available in widths from 8 through 18 feet and door heights of 6-feet 6inch, 6-feet 9-inch, 7-feet as well as 8-feet.

FINANCEDividend policy is the decision regarding funds to be distributed or returned to the equity investors. This can be done with common stock dividends, preferred stock dividends, or stock repurchase by the business of its own stock. The aim of this decision is to retain the resources in the business that are required to run the business or make additional investments in the business, as long as the returns earned exceed the required return. In theory, management should return or distribute all resources that cannot be invested in the business at levels in excess of the required return. In practice, however, dividends are often maintained at or changed to certain levels in order to convey the proper signals to the investors and the financial markets. For example, dividends can be maintained at moderate levels to demonstrate stability, maintained at or reduced to low levels to demonstrate the growth opportunities for the business, or increased to higher levels to demonstrate the restoration of a strong financial (capital) structure (debt and equity capital) for the business.Capital is the total of financial resources invested in the business. In terms of the sources, there are two types of capital: interest-bearing debt funds, such as loans, bonds, short-term notes, and interest-bearing payables to trade suppliers; and equity, such as common and preferred stock and the earnings retained in the business that add to stockholders share of the entities. In terms of uses, there are also two types of capital: net working capital, such as operating cash, inventory, and receivables, less interest-free payables to trade suppliers; and fixed capital, such as property, plant, and equipment. Capital is managed to maximize wealth by maximizing the rates of return on investments of capital and thus maximizing the total net present value of the business. This can be done by minimizing the amount of capital used for given business investments with given business returns.

Smith Restores Smile of 34-Year Old Domestic Abuse Survivor and Mother Although Ive been involved with GBAS for a number of years, Ive not had a case sent my way until recently, said Dr. Smith. When Gretchen saw her new smile in the mirror, she tearfully said, Now when I look in the mirror, Ill no longer remember the abuse. Thank you! I dont know who was happier — her or me! Dr. Smith went on to add, Through the GBAS program, AACD members like me assist survivors by treating their dental injuries sustained through domestic abuse. The program helps women reclaim their smiles, their self-esteem, and their lives. And, because more than five million people are affected by domestic violence every year in the United States and Canada, there is clearly a need for a program like Give Back A Smile to help survivors rejuvenate their lives through the caring hands of a local dentist. Im honored to be part of the Give Back a Smile program.

Real Estate Brokers with the SRES designation help seniors make wise decisions about selling their home, buying rental property, managing the capital gains and estate tax implications of owning real estate, obtaining a reverse mortgage, moving to a senior community and other issues. The designation was introduced in 1997 and is nationally recognized.

Although Henry and Arabella Huntington were not married until 1913, both were intimately involved in planning and furnishing the house, which was built by Myron Hunt (1868-1962) between 1906 and 1910. On December12, 1910, the London firm Partridge, Lewis and Simmons (now Partridge Fine Arts) supplied the Huningtons with thirty-five pieces of Chippendale and Adam style furniture, much of it actually dating from the nineteenth century or later. (2) Among the fine period examples are two settees, two stools, and seven mahogany chairs formerly in the collection of Lewis Henry Hugh Clifford, ninth Baron Clifford of Chudleigh, and it is on one of the chairs from this suite that Henry Huntington is seated for his own portrait by Birley, painted, like that of his wife, in 1924. The frames of the settees (see Pls. II, VI) are fashioned with brackets at each corner and around the legs, and they exhibit spirited carving of acanthus leaves and animal heads and paws. The needlework upholstery, while early in date, is not original. A large set of chairs was also purchased in 1910 from the perhaps more familiar art dealer Sir Joseph Duveen (1869-1939). They are attributed to the shop of the London cabinetmaker Giles Grendey (see Pl. XI), whose chairs often bear paper labels and ink inscriptions under the seat rails. A makers mark–WF–is impressed on the back splat shoe of two of the chairs in the Huntington set, and two others bear labels inscribed, respectively, Louise Cecilia Pearse and Miss Sophie Hall, possibly referring to onetime owners. A similar set, with openwork backs also in the form of shells, is at Stourhead, Wiltshire, and they maybe those bought from Grendey in 1746 by Henry Hoare II (1705-1785) (3)
These great estates and surrounding landscapes were designed by notable architects, and some of the largest properties were manicured by as many as three dozen gardeners. One such house, in the shingle style, is Weatherend in Rockport, built for the John Gribbel family about 1900. In 1913 a Norwegian-born landscape architect named Hans Heistad (d. 1945), the son of a shipbuilder, was hired by Gribbel to improve the grounds around Weatherend. He divided the land around the house into garden rooms delineated by masonry walls and built tables, chairs, and benches to furnish these open-air rooms.About 1905 Heistad had been hired by Olmsted Brothers of Brookline, Massachusetts, founded by Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903). In 1910 he was introduced to Maine while employed by the firm at Chatwold, the Joseph Pulitzer estate in Bar Harbor. He worked on many other Maine estates as well and finally moved permanently to the coast of Maine in 1913.In 1983 the late William Fisher, who grew up summering at Weatherend, was inspired to form a company he named Wcatherend[R] Estate Furniture in Rockland to design and manufacture garden furniture inspired by Heistads pieces. More than 100 members and guests were at the March meeting of the California Retired Teachers Association. President Orville Johnson opened the meeting, which had a St. Patricks Day theme. Members Toni Kelly, Eleanor Moore and Rita Hammer donned huge Irish hats and sold raffle tickets to bring in scholarship money for teachers in training at Cal State Hayward. In June, the CRTA will award four $2,000 scholarships. After a traditional meal of corned beef and cabbage, program chair Doris Marciel introduced the San Lorenzo Village Singers. This group began as the PTA Mother Singers from Sunset Elementary School in the 1950s. In three-part harmony, they sang a variety of songs including show tunes, western songs and old favorites. Costumed in black with tuxedo shirts, the group of 20 ladies, under the direction of Chabot College professor Richard Dinwiddie and accompanied by Erika Uribe, delighted the listeners. It was an enjoyable afternoon for all. If only aprons could talk, what a tale they could tell. Judy Vetrovec impressed the members of the Castro Valley Womens Club at their last general meeting with her knowledge and history of the apron. Judy encouraged members to wear one of the many aprons as she talked about them.

Consider adding a legal service plan to your employee perks A recent study found that three lawsuits are filed every second in the United States. That means most people are more likely to be involved in some sort of legal action over the next year than to be hospitalized. And, many of those people will be your credit unions employees. Employers struggling with a tight job market are learning that providing legal services as a benefit is a low-cost, low-hassle incentive for prospective and current employees. The plans cost $10-$16 per month for full family coverage and rarely increase in cost no matter how many employees use the services.
They argue that, if marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and other drugs were legalized, several positive things would probably occur: (1) drug prices would fall; (2) users would obtain their drugs at low, government-regulated prices, and they would no longer be forced to resort to crime in order to support their habits, (3) levels of drug-related crime, and particularly violent crime, would significantly decline, resulting in less crowded courts, jails, and prisons (this would allow law-enforcement personnel to focus their energies on the “real criminals” in society); and the drug production, distribution, and sale would no longer be controlled by organized crime, and thus such criminal syndicates as the Colombian cocaine “cartels,” the Jamaican “posses,” and the various “mafias” around the country and the world would be decapitalized, and the violence associated with drug distribution rivalries would be eliminated. By contrast, the anti-legalization camp argues that violent crime would not necessarily decline in a legalized drug market. In fact, there are three reasons why it might actually increase. First, removing the criminal sanctions against the possession and distribution of illegal drugs would make them more available and attractive and, hence, would create large numbers of new users. Second, an increase in use would lead to a greater number of dysfunctional addicts who could not support themselves, their habits, or their lifestyles through legitimate means. Hence crime would be their only alternative. Third, more users would mean more of the violence associated with the ingestion of drugs. These divergent points of view tend to persist because the relationships between drugs and crime are quite complex and because the possible outcomes of a legalized drug market are based primarily on speculation. However, it is possible, from a careful review of the existing empirical literature on drugs and violence, to make some educated inferences.
Some legal advice on aspects of the Internet. David Lewis (1) E-payment and e-money trends are you protected? The full potential of the Internet will only be realised when electronic payment systems are more secure. Currently the Internet lacks a fast, easy and secure way to let consumers buy and sell electronically, and theres no electronic money system on the market that is legal tender.

TAKING A GOLF TRIP IS NO EASY FEAT. Theres the planning. The arranging. The booking. And then theres the most important part of all: getting your spouse to sign off on the budget. We figure the magic budget number for a golf trip these days is around $2,000. Its a nice piece of change, to be sure, but well venture most golfers could get their significant others green light for the rare two-grand splurge. To see just how far $2,000 will go, we handed over that sum to three of our favorite writers and told them to design their own golf trips. Humorist Henry Beard went looking for Ireland and wound up in Oregon. Jeffrey Toobin, a staff writer for The New Yorker, fled the bright lights of Manhattan for. the bright lights of Las Vegas. And Vanity Fair special contributor Bryan Burrough did his best to live up to that magazines stylish reputation by taking a four-day trip to Myrtle Beach. Here is what they found.

BANGKOK, Aug. 25 Kyodo A Thai herbal medicine that can enlarge womens breasts does not cause cancer and is safe for human consumption, the Public Health Ministry said Wednesday. Health Minister Korn Dabbaransi said toxicity studies by the ministrys Medical Sciences Department showed no adverse effects on rats given low doses of 10 milligrams of the herb per kilogram of body weight every day for three months.
Law is one of an increasing number of medical tourists going where the sun is hot, the exchange rate is favourable and the surgery bargain basement. The slogan of those who promote this trend is: “First world treatment at third world prices”. Its a phenomenon that embraces not only those who hop on a plane for a tummy tuck or face-lift, but those travelling for hip replacements, knee replacements, cancer treatment, those who have found themselves lolling on NHS waiting lists or struggling to wring their care out of a stretched home health service. Approximately 50,000 people travel abroad each year from the UK for a range of medical treatments, including cosmetic surgery. The price differences are significant. In certain developing countries dental, eye and cosmetic surgeries cost anything between a quarter and a third of the price they do here. Indian open-heart surgery costs one tenth of its UK private price. The day was bound to come when people would start to shop around.
Two ingredients common in many hair- and skin-care products have been linked to abnormal development of breasts in boys. Lavender oil and tea tree oil con tain compounds that act like female sex hormones and interfere with male hormones, researchers have determined. Enlarged male breasts, or gynecomastia, result from an imbalance between the activity of estrogens, which stimulate breast growth, and estrogen-inhibiting androgens. The condition is extremely rare before puberty, says Denver-area pediatric endocrinologist Clifford Bloch. From the youngsters and their parents, Bloch learned that at least five boys had been using a shampoo, hair gel, soap, or another topical product that listed lavender oil among its ingredients. One of the products also contained tea tree oil. A couple of patients were putting pure lavender oil on their skin, he says.

Dear Editor: I have been a multistate workers compensation administrator for many years. Those who know me can easily quote that I have been echoing your sentiments for at least that long. I could easily state who the doctor groups are by name that are knowingly abusing a system that was designed with good intent. This only proves that the root of all workers comp evil is greed. I do not believe that these abusive overtreaters realize the net effect on society as whole when they bleed employers out of business. I have been asked by many of the Fortune 500 companies that I have administered claims for as a self-insurance administrator, How can we manage risk in a state like California, where literally 33 percent of every risk dollar we spend is in that one state alone? My answer, while not yew popular, has proven effective. It is this: Dont take on the risk. Relocate your business to a more employer-friendly state, do away with unionized employees, offer excellent benefits, and enforce the use of the contributory benefits–HMOs, long- and short-term disability. Sadly, this has cost in excess of 20,000 jobs that I know of here in California. Yet, I would still give the same advice.
Other states may be included in the future.

Monday May 5, 2003 will go down in history as a day to remember in employment law. It was the day the long-debated amendments to the Health Safety in Employment Act finally came into effect. Why is this new legislation so important? The term “workplace stress” took on a whole new significance, with new obligations for employers, and potentially serious financial consequences for those who ignore them. Workplace stress is no longer simply a sad fact of life. It is now an officially recognised and legislated “workplace hazard”, with the amendments extending the definitions of “harm” and “hazard” to include physical and mental harm caused by work-related stress. A cursory reading of the new legislation might be enough to instantly treble employers workplace stress, but a deeper understanding goes some way to restoring mental equilibrium. The Occupational Safety and Health booklet, Healthy work, Managing Stress in the Workplace, tells employers that “there is only a requirement to manage work stressors or the individuals stressed situation where you can be reasonably expected to know about the stress. Even then the obligation is only to do what is reasonably practicable in the circumstances.”

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate: * Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 5%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. * Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.
Awakened from their slumber, real estate investments are flourishing in a low interest rate, low inflation climate Ive written several articles recommending REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts) over the past two years, and have decided to write some general thoughts on where real estate securities may be headed. At the time, REITs were yielding as high as 14%, which made no sense in relation to the yields on other conservative income vehicles. REITs have returned about 60% overall in the past two years.

Inflation fails to subside in 2006H1 * Retail sales picked up in May, growing 1.3% year-on-year. As expected with confidence remaining volatile over the last few months and only rising slightly in June, retail sales have been patchy, rising by just 0.4% in Q1 after being flat in Q4. We expect a further weakening in retail sales growth, in line with our forecast for an overall weakening in household expenditure in H2 2006. * The trade deficit widened yet again in April to EUR 6.88bn, a 5.5% rise on the year, after already reaching 8.9% of GDP in Q1. While this figure is necessarily high given recent developments in oil prices, it also does hint at underlying structural problems. A recovery in the Eurozone, together with a modest depreciation of the EUR from its recent highs, may bring some respite to the burgeoning deficit, but Spain continues to lose market share in intra-Eurozone trade. With rapidly rising unit labour costs the trade deficit is unlikely to be reduced, while the cumulative effects of sustained higher inflation will ultimately also increase the burden of adjustment.
Who are they? The perennial underachievers, but the continuing success of Spains club sides must be represented at one of the major international competitions sooner or later. Qualifying: The Spaniards qualified in typically serene circumstances, from a group containing Austria and Israel. Coach: Jose Antonio Camacho. The former Real Madrid defender has been popular with the Spanish public, but it is time Camacho delivered.
Highlights and Key Issues * A third consecutive monthly rise in the number of unemployed in December- almost entirely in construction - bodes ill for GDP growth in the current year, which we forecast at a below consensus 2.5%. There are now 107,000 more unemployed workers than in December 2006. * The housing market crisis is weighing heavily on consumer confidence. Last year the market saw a sharp fall in the rate of house price inflation, which we forecast at 3.5% year-on-year in 2007Q4 compared to 9.1 % a year earlier. The danger is that in 2008 a weaker labour market, relatively high mortgage costs, and falling house prices may lead to a sharp rise in foreclosures.

This book reminds us to look at the children, not at the school. Its a wonderful guide for the new teacher, and a book one could solidly recommend to parents. It reads well and the authors classroom experience as well as his years as a principal provide a good basis for his thoughts. The concept of the “yardsticks” discussed here are general expectations and patterns of development, not standards or precise predictions. Theres a nice section that lists age-appropriate suggestions for thematic units, and guidelines for the various curriculum areas. This book belongs in absolutely every school and every classroom. $12.95, plus $3.50 s/h. These lovely people have a “newsletter” which will chattily tell you about their materials. Ferid Boughedir, one of Tunisia and Africas greatest filmmakers, has no doubt about it. Of all artistic expression, he says, cinema carries the greatest punch. It draws its inspiration from literature, painting, music and poetry It creates its own world with its own people but it is always rooted in the society that produces it. To understand a civilisation, it has often been said, look at its cinema. “What has been most encouraging is that unlike in other countries of the South where there is a mass market only for escapist films, Tunisian audiences have come in their droves to watch our productions - which are anything but mass oriented,” says Boughedir. What does he attribute the success of Tunisian films to?

The “best” job for you to pursue is a “fun” job! A job that is exciting to you. A job where you cant wait to get to work when you wake up! Do you realize that perhaps as many as 80 percent of the people in the workforce today dont enjoy what they are doing? What a terrible way to go through life! Starting salary, bonuses, benefits and geography are certainly important. But those things will take care of themselves. If your work is fun, you will be good at it, and the tangible rewards will follow.
Melanie McCabe began working in 1971, but she didnt have a real job interview until two years ago. A teacher at Sherwood Forest Elementary School in Winston-Salem, she applied for a summer position in 1997 through a program called Educators in the Workplace. When Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center invited her in, she thought it was just for a casual “getting to know you” chat. She found herself in her first formal interview instead. McCabe says the experience helped her realize what skills her students need to prepare for the workplace. Sometimes its something as basic as making eye contact in conversation. Thats what Educators in the Workplace is all about. It exposes teachers to the business world by placing them in summer jobs. Then they can make changes in their classrooms to better equip students.
